Einander zuhören – Stadt-(Ge)Schichten

Listening to each other - Layers of narratives

Einander zuhören – Stadt-(Ge)Schichten is a project that invites artists, researchers and students to examin the relation between city residents and their urban environment. The ongoing project is being developed together with Goethe-Institut Athens and Fonés in in the frame of a locative media project with noTours and a sound cartography of Athens, creating interactive and site specific sound-narratives for a series of sound walks in the city.

SoundCloud Mapping Mashup

Tuesday 2 April 2013, by noTours team

The SoundCloud Mapping Mashup is a tool developed by Horacio González for the Listening City project workshops, that allows to create a sound map using a SoundCloud set. You would find the first working example of its usage here!

Athens Listening City Map

During the field recording workshops celebrated in Athens, Dresden an Essen, the use of several SoundCloud accounts has provided a friendly user framework to publish soundscapes recorded by the students and to share or exchange them between the different city teams, however soundCloud still doesn’t offer any interface specifically designed for sound mapping or geotagging.

Being the participants of Athens workshop students of art with no previous experience in sound or technology and having in mind the possibility of creating a small collaborative sound map of each of city where the workshops where held, Horacio González decided to get advantage SoundCloud API to design a system that would allow to create a sound map containing the sounds published in a set, by simply adding tags including the latitude and longitude information to each recording.

Until the end of the project, October 2013, all participants and collaborators will work in three different accounts created for each of the workshops, having a very simple interface for non experience users, while the API provides a very promising programming interface to create the final result. At the end of the project we hope to be able to publish the SoundCloud Mapping Mashup as a tool for other sound enthusiasts to build their own maps.
